The SASSA offers social assistance based on the means test. The SASSA evaluates the income and assets of the person applying for social assistance as well as his/her spouse to check if the person’s means are below the stipulated amount.

This grant is only for people who have insufficient means to support them. Using this means test the SASSA determines whether a person qualifies to receive the grant or not. Only people who receive a monthly income below the threshold can receive this grant. As of 1st April 2023, the SASSA has decided on two monthly thresholds for means test –

1) Income Threshold
  • If you are single then you should not earn more than R96 840 a year.
  • If you are married then your yearly income should not exceed R193 680 a year.
2) Assets Threshold
  • If you are single then you should not own assets worth more than R1 372 800.
  • If you are married then your combined assets should not be worth more than R2 745 600.

The amount of old age grants varies depending on the applicant’s age. The grant amount increases each year. As per the last amount increase of 1 October 2023, the applicant aged between the age 60 and 74 receives a monthly payment of R2 090 per person, while the applicant aged 75 or older receives a monthly payment of R2 110 per person.

Generally, the changes in grant amount are reflected yearly in the national budget speech or at the opening of Parliament. It is projected that in the upcoming update of 1 April 2024, the old age grant monthly payments are expected to increase by R10 per person.

How to apply for the SASSA Old Age grant?

If you are too old or sick and unable to travel to the SASSA office to apply personally, your family member or friend can apply on your behalf. They are known as the procurator. The procurator is the person who applied for the grants on your behalf.

How long it takes to process the old age grant application?

It may take up to 3 months to process your SASSA old age grant application. If your application gets approved, you will receive the payment from the date on which you applied. If your application is declined or rejected by SASSA, they will give you a letter explaining why your application is not approved and how you can challenge this decision within 90 days of being notified.

If you are admitted to a state institution or if your income and assets improve so much that you no longer pass the means test or if you die, SASSA will cancel your grant.

How To Receive SASSA Old Age Grant Payment?

You will receive the grant payment only if your application gets approved. After the approval, you will get paid on the date on which you applied. You can check the SASSA payment dates to know more. Generally, the grant is paid on the 2nd or 3rd day of each month. You can choose any of the below ways to get paid your old age pension.

  • Direct Bank Transfer: Your grant will be paid directly into the bank account, that you provided. But the bank account should be registered in your name.
  • Cash Payout: You can collect your grant payment in cash from authorized pay points like Pick n Pat, Shoprite, Boxer, Checkers, Usave, and Spar. You can use your SASSA gold card for this.

The old age grant aims to help old South African people financially. The beneficiaries receive this grant based on the income they declared during the application process. Reasons for Old Age grant lapse

The old age grant may lapse due to the following reasons –

  • The grant holder has passed away
  • The grant holder was admitted to state-funded institutions
  • The beneficiary did not claim the grant for 3 consecutive months
  • The grant holder does not live in South Africa anymore
  • The grant holder no longer fulfils the means test criteria. It means that the income and assets of the beneficiary have improved so much.

The old age grant is based on a sliding scale. The more private income you have, the less grant money you will receive. So if you are admitted to state institutions for more than four months, your grant amount will be reduced to 25% of the total grant.

As an active SASA grant holder, you have some responsibilities to fulfil.

  • Keep the SASSA updated about your changes in personal and financial circumstances.
  • If your physical address or contact details are changed then update SASSA as soon as possible.
  • Always provide true and correct information. False information may lead to suspension of your grant.
